for an Engaged Crowd of Adult Learners:

Diverse interpretations of Bible Stories can empower us to engage more constructively in disagreements today!

Mahloket Matters: How to Disagree Constructively uses the “chevruta" method (study pairs) who critically study together and discover that the divergent interpretations of the sages are expressed as a mahloket, conflicting opinions, on every page of classic Jewish texts. Both the content and the method of studying these texts can be used to increase the desire and ability to understand and engage more constructively with conflicting political opinions today, improving civil discourse.

Each unit examines a central question, presented through the lens of a biblical conflict story, with all of its textual ambiguities, and the classic commentaries on the story. We consider contradictory historical precedents  to support or refute opposing responses to the central question of the unit and then conclude by considering contradictory news from a recent event.

Register ONCE and you will receive access information for ALL sessions.

adult education

No matter where you are in your life’s journey, at Temple Beth-El we know that
we always have so much more we want to know. Our Continuing Adult Education programs are for anyone from 21 to 101! So, if you fall within this age range,
we’ll probably have a program for you. Or, we’d be glad to create something to meet your interests.
We welcome every one of your ideas!

  • If you’d like to teach a class, either a one-off or a series, we’ll try to make it happen.

  • And, if you want to study something we’re not yet offering, we’ll try to make that happen as well.

  • And, if you’d like to volunteer to help put our programming together, we’d love to have you join our new Continuing Adult Education Team, chaired by Marjorie Friedman.
