Social Justice
Social Action Committee at TBE:
One of the strengths of the TBE community is that so many of our members look outward to see how they can support others in need. We try to put into action the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam - repairing our world - and Rodef Tzedek - pursuing justice. We have many educational opportunities to keep ourselves informed of our greater communties' needs and we find ways to make change where we can. We are also involved in FAST (Faith and Strength Together), a faith-based coalition that works to promote social justice topics among elected officials.
Educational Activities include: Yom Kippur Social Action Forum (in 2011, on Homelessness in Pinellas County); Social Policy Forums (in 2011, presented by Florida Representatives Jim Frishe and Rick Kriseman); Research groups in FAST.
Outreach Activities include: Annual Mitzvah Day (Feb. 26, 2012); monthly lunches for Pinellas Hope; Christmas Eve activity at Pinellas Hope; participation in Martin Luther King Day Parade and the Gay Pride Parade.
A new offshoot of the Social Action Committee is the Greening Committee. We work to reduce the environmental footprint of our Temple and our Temple families. We have already reduced the electric and water bills of the Temple through simple conservation methods. We also host the "Lo Watt Shabbat," an eco-friendly Shabbat honoring Earth Day.
